What is a relationship counselor’s role and responsibilities?

Fixing the problems of your relationship requires a lot of effort from both sides; but it may also mean seeking for help and talking to a qualified relationship counselor. All relationships are not perfect, however, there are people who know how to handle their relationship problems and are able to find the right solutions before everything fall into pieces. If you are struggling to save your relationship, and don’t seem to have what it takes to keep the love burning, you may need some help of a good relationship counselor.

A counselor is a professional who has the necessary requirements, study and experience to get the license to provide advice and guidance to couples or individuals who need help regarding their relationship. He is also the mediator between two couples who get carried away by their emotions in their quest to save their relationship. No matter how long they have been together, there are couples who find talking to each other about their problems difficult. Conversations like these can bring awkward feeling and can even lead to another misunderstanding. A counselor must help these couples understand each other, express their feelings and most of all, counselors help these people listen to what their partner has to say.

The process is a systematic procedure on how these people will address their individual problems and relationship problems. It might take some time before the couples fix their issues and the relationship counselor should not take any side during the whole process.

A counselor must make sure that his clients are on the right track. He helps people with the obstacles but he does not decide for the couple. He gives suggestions but the activities that the couples will do is none of his responsibilities. The counselor helps a person assess himself but does not have the rights to claim whether he is doing it right or not. Most of all, counselors are not there to save your marriage. A lot of couples end up getting divorce after counseling. This result does not mean that the counselor is not effective instead, the counselor was able to help these individual see what’s right for them.

Counseling is not just about realizing each other’s mistake. Although this part is necessary, counseling is also about rediscovering the good things about each other. Love brought you together and love can make your relationship stronger. Problems are not tools to end your relationship; these things make your relationship stronger. Your counselor might suggest activities that will bring you closer and realize how sweet and good you are at each other. However, no matter what the result of your counseling is, your relationship counselor is not responsible for any decision you make.
